On average, Boston gets over 10 inches of snow every winter, which makes for scenic cityscapes, crisp mornings, and lovely walks around the city, assuming you’re bundled up. Here are some ideas for activities to do if you’ll be in Boston during the wintertime:
Cheer for the rivals at the Beanpot Hockey Tournament. Harvard Crimson, BU Terriers, BC Eagles, and Northeastern Huskies compete in this annual February tourney that has become a rowdy and spirited social gathering since it started in 1952. There are two semifinal matches, followed by a consolation game for the two losers and a championship game for the two winners.
Go ice-skating in the nation’s oldest public park. Frog Pond at Boston Common is cheap ($5 for adults and free for kids age 13 and under), and there are rentals on site. It’s family-friendly and makes for a memorable winter experience. You can also go sledding in Prospect Hill Park, Amory Park, or the Arnold Arboretum.
See the New England Boat Show (Feb. 16–24, 2013) at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. 300,000 square feet (27,870 square meters) of powerboats for fishing, cruising, and watersports. There are also over 250 exhibits of new marine accessories, galleyware, and navigation equipment. Admission is $15 for adults and free for kids age 15 and under.
Shop for munchies at the Somerville Winter Farmers Market (Saturdays 9:30–2pm through April 13, 2013) in the Armory on Highland Avenue. Among the many local and regional items are pastries, chocolate, cheese, and wine.
Warm up inside one of Boston’s best museums, like the Harvard Museum of Natural History, the Museum of Fine Arts (free on Wednesdays after 4pm), the Insitute of Contemporary Art, the John F. Kennedy Museum, or the Museum of Science. Other good places to pop inside are the beautiful Trinity Church in Copley Square and the Samuel Adams Brewery for a tour of the world-famous beer.
