Summer is a great time to visit Boston. Temperatures are mild staying around the high-60s/low-70s Fahrenheit (low 20s Celsius), with the sun usually shining overhead. There are also many seasonal activities and events to enjoy. To help you plan your perfect Summer in Boston, here are some suggestions.

Get outdoors

Boston experiences mild summers, allowing you to enjoy the outdoors without getting overheated. Accessible from Boston Harbor are 34 islands that comprise the Boston Harbor Islands National Park Area, where you can camp, kayak, hike, swim, bird watch, picnic and more. Additionally, Charles River provides opportunities for water recreation like sailing, canoeing, rowing, swimming, kayaking and simply enjoying the waterfront scenery. And for those who want to see the city by bike, there is a vibrant biking scene in Boston. One worthwhile way to explore the city in the summer is via a Guided Bike Tour of Boston. The excursion allows you to experience Boston’s famous sites as well as off the beaten path attractions, pedal along the historic Freedom Trail and cycle through areas like the North End (Little Italy), Copley Square and Charlestown while enjoying the beautiful weather.

Attend a summer festival

During the summer there are an array of fun summer events to enjoy. While the New Bedford Summerfest Folk Music and Arts Festival is a family-oriented festival showcasing over 70 well-known and emerging folk music artists, the The Charles River Food Truck Festival allows attendees to sample delicious foods from Boston food trucks in Artesani Herter Park. Moreover, the week-long Harborfest celebrates Boston’s maritime and colonial history. The event is also when the Boston Harborfest ChowderFest competition takes place, as well as July 4th fireworks at the Charles River Esplanade. And for free outdoor entertainment, Boston Public Library hosts Concerts in the Courtyard, which take place on Fridays at 12:30pm from June 7 through August 30 in the courtyard of the Central Library in Copley Square.

Go whale watching

From May through mid-October a visit to Boston will allow you to see humpback, finback, minke, pilot and blue whales up close. The easiest way to experience this wildlife encounter is through a tour, like a Boston Whale Watching Cruise. You’ll visit Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, a 842-square mile (2.181-square kilometer) stretch of open water at the mouth of Massachusetts Bay — known for its abundance of humpback, finback and minke whales — with an experienced naturalist guide.
